How did you celebrate Global Youth Service Day?
Our GlobeMed chapter at the University of Colorado at Boulder has not yet had the chance to celebrate Global Youth Service Day because we were founded last October. We plan on celebrating it this year by hosting a dinner that can potentially raise $5,000 to pay for the shipping of a container filled with $100,000 worth of medical supplies to the Himalayan Healthcare hospital in rural Nepal. The medical supplies will help Himalayan Healthcare provide primary health care to the village people of rural Nepal. We believe that in order to make a change there needs to be sustainability which is why we not only plan to celebrate Global Youth Service Day this year but the following years as well.
If you were the mayor, what changes would you make in your community?
As mayor of our community, GlobeMed would like to implement a plan of action so that all members of the community have access to affordable health care. There are many people in our community who avoid being treated not because of the lack of commitment to themselves, but because health care is too expensive for them. As mayor we would ask the government for grants to make vouchers for those who cannot afford health care. These vouchers would be accepted at approved clinics. We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to take care of themselves properly and as mayor we would take full advantage to make this possible.
What are the 7 Things or problems in the world you want to help solve?
1. Help provide primary health care to everyone around the world. Primary health care should not be a luxury, but a human right.
2. Help distribute valuable supplies to many parts of the world which can improve the quality of life for many people.
3. Help create sustainable help for impoverished countries so that they are able to take care of themselves in the future.
4. Help educate people to correct generalizations of others from the way they look. For example, not all Africans live in rural areas and only listen to tribal music – they also like Britney Spears.
5. Help set a type of policy that will obligate missionary trips to be completely informed of the country they will visit so that unintentional harm can be avoided. This is essential because although they may have good intentions they can create problems like handing out vitamins that people will take however many times they like, diminishing their health, because they were not given proper instructions.
6. Help people realize that their help can make a difference in the lives of the impoverished to provide basic needs and end unnecessary suffering.
7. Help create solutions for global climate change. This problem affects every person in the world because without a world there is no reason to help solve any other problems.
Short "About Me" section
GlobeMed is a network of university students which partner with grassroots organizations around the world to help promote global health equity and improve the health of the impoverished. Members commit to a life of leadership in global health and social justice. Chapters are at the heart of GlobeMed's model of engaging students. Each chapter partners with a grassroots organization in a developing country to collaborate on specific projects, organize educational programs, organize a global health curriculum on campus, and lead trips to work with partners in communities abroad. Our chapter is partnered with an extraordinary program that strives to better the lives of the Nepali people - Himalayan Health Care (HHC). HHC supports village families in Dhading, Dolakha and IIam with basic health care, education and income generation. In 2004 HHC launched its very own community hospital in IIam to serve as many as 350,000 people of the surrounding 48 villages and two large towns. HHC has improved the standards and enrollment of the village schools by providing funding, supplies and training programs to expand the opportunities for t Nepali children. Some have even gone on to technical schools and colleges to return and take over the running of their village’s health posts, schools and services . HHC also gives seed money for entrepreneurial projects that generate income for women to help support their families.
