Profile Information

How did you celebrate Global Youth Service Day?
This year I am going to be involved in several events that promote Healthy Living and provide information on diabetes. A disease that can often be prevented or controlled by a more active and healthy life style. The first event is holding its second annual Healthy Living Fair; last year about 400 people from the community attended. A special teen component is being added this year, and my friend and I will be encouraging use of the indoor walking track and distributing information on diabetes. This spring we'll join our mayor in her annual walk to promote maintaining an active life style. We are planning family-fun activities, to be held after the walk, to encourage making fitness a part of your weekly activites. We'll be completing a file/binder of information to be available as a resource in the senior room of the community center with details on diabetes.
If you were the mayor, what changes would you make in your community?
During the winter months, it is harder to stay physically active, if you do not enjoy being outdoors. I would offer more indoor activities that encourage physical fitness and are available for all ages.
What are the 7 Things or problems in the world you want to help solve?
1. Obesity
2. Diabetes
3. Clean Environment
4. Reduce garbage / recycle
5. Clean Water
6. Homelessness
7. AIDS
Short "About Me" section
I am sixteen years old and as a Girl Scout I have been involved in volunteer activities that promote various causes, but always something to help others or the environment. My friend Tara and I are now working to complete the requirements for the gold award, we chose Healthy Living as our theme. We both are involved in school sports and feel that including fitness in our schedules is very important. This message is something we want to share, to encourage regular activities to ward off obesity, diabetes and other diseases that can develop from inactivity. Our goal is to inform and offer suggestions on ways to enjoy living a healthy, active life.
