How did you celebrate Global Youth Service Day?: I helped with a fundraiser called Baskets for Bangladesh wish raised money for the school I am currently building in Bangladesh. We had volunteers create baskets with donated items and activities and than auctioned them off at our school. We made over $500 from this service project which is just one small part of the much larger Bangladesh school Project.

If you were the mayor, what changes would you make in your community?: If I were the mayor, I would focus on: improving education, cleaning up our local parks, and helping to alleviate unemployment in our community, especially since Sarasota has a high percentage of homeless and nationally is ranked the worst city in the United States.

What are the 7 Things or problems in the world you want to help solve?: If I were the mayor, I would focus on: improving education, cleaning up our local parks, and helping to alleviate unemployment in our community, especially since Sarasota has a high percentage of homeless and nationally is ranked the worst city in the United States.

I would like to work right along with the Millennium development goals.

1- I feel that improving and making access more readily available for primary education is vital. That is why I spent the last two years focusing my efforts on achieving my goal of building a school in Bangladesh.

2- I love working with Girl Scouts as my vehicle of service which helps me to solve many of the problems in my home community including: Bullying, teaching self defense, and general peer mentoring. Girl Scouts enables these girls to build Courage Confidence and Character!

3. I also wish to help reduce the global spread of AIDS, Malaria, and other diseases. So far I have raised enough money and gathered enough supplies to give out 300 bed nets in Bangladesh.

4. While ending genocide seems like a rather large problem, it is one that I personally can help to achieve.

5. I hope to help eradicate extreme hunger and poverty.

6. I hope to work in international relations and help to improve global partnerships.

7. I also hope to work with environmental sustainability to decrease green house emissions.

Short "About Me" section: Laurabeth Goldsmith is a Senior at Pine View and has been the life force behind building a school in the Khalapara region of Bangladesh and every detail that goes along with it since July 2008. The educational and planning portions of this project go towards achieving her Girl Scout Gold Award. She has been an active girl scout for the past 12 years and serves on the local and national board for Girl Scouts of Gulf Coast Florida. Additionally, Laurabeth has served in the capacity as president of her National Junior Honor Society, Future Business Leaders of America, and Key Club. For the 2009-2010 year she will serve as Lieutenant Governor for division 18 of the Florida District Key Club International.
