Scarves to Benefit Cancer Research!

Hey everyone! This holiday season I decided I wanted to lead a service project to benefit cancer research. So I created a Facebook event page and put up flyers in my hometown advertising scarves that I knit and sold for $6.00 each. How did you celebrate Global Youth Service Day?: In honor of Global Youth Service Day, this past holiday season I knit a bunch of scarves and sold them in my community to benefit cancer research. People paid $6.00 for each scarf and all proceeds went to Dana Farber. It was a huge success, and people are still picking up scarves and donating money today! I'm almost finished with the project, but so far I think I've collected around $600! I know it will feel really good to drop the check off to Dana Farber!

If you were the mayor, what changes would you make in your community?: If I were they mayor, I would work toward making community service a more enjoyable and common action to take in my town. I feel like people generally think of community service as a punishment or requirement, but I want people to think of it for what it is-- a way to give back to society! I want people to feel good about doing community service and helping others. Everyone has special talents, luck, or some sort of advantage over others that they could use to HELP others. And that would be my goal. I want people to WANT to give back.

What are the 7 Things or problems in the world you want to help solve?: 1. Hunger. That's a huge one.
2. Little medical knowledge.
3. Poverty.
4. War needs to end. How can we possibly fix #'s 1-3 if everyone is fighting?
5. Kind of like #2, but I want to improve cancer research.
6. Crime. I'm not sure how, but the crime rate needs to go down.
7. Substance abuse. I think more help needs to be provided for those who are addicted to alcohol and other drugs.

Short "About Me" section: I'm almost 18 years old and a senior in high school. I'm a huge Miley fan and I love community service. I do a lot in my community because I like how it feels to give back to others! I love this website because I think it will reach out to a lot of young people and encourage them to do good!
