Get Ur Good On

School’s out! After a year of classwork, students are departing school and beginning months of summer rest and relaxation. But summer can be a season of service too, a time when kids and teens use extra free time to do good. Join Miley Cyrus and her friends at YSA as they say “so long” to school and spring straight into summer with these 10 ways to Get Ur Good On!

  1. Write thank you letters to people who inspired you or helped you through your years in school. A small thank you letter can really make a difference.
  2. Get some green when you Get Ur Good On! YSA Grants offer the cash you need to run a great community action project. Youth, teachers and school groups are eligible to apply.  Check out what people are saying about service-learning.
  3. Although many students graduate from school in May, not all children are as privileged. Help children get a positive start in elementary school. Give them the boost to succeed. Donate books and school supplies to Staples for Students drive.
  4. Proud of your academics? You should be! Help others feel proud of education. Donate to First Graduate. You may be helping someone become the first person in their family to graduate!
  5. Now that you are free of classes and homework, take a moment to help others. Visit your local food bank and offer a few hours of service. Give others the gift of groceries.
  6. It’s nearly summer, ensure that the ‘great outdoors’ is kept clean for us all. Find time to pick up trash at the beach, park, or around your neighborhood. Organize groups of three of four people (it’s safer and way more fun) and throw on a pair of gloves. See who collects the most trash by the end of the day!
  7. Plan on vacationing this summer? Volunteer abroad with Cross-Cultural Solutions. Be the international traveler and life-changer you were meant to be.
  8. Inspire others and start a blog. Update it weekly with your thoughts about life, education, and community service. Start one with Posterous.
  9. Have a bunch of old books and textbooks sitting around your bedroom? Consider donating these books to First Book. Give other students the opportunity to learn!
  10. Now that you are an official scholar, donate your time and help tutor children in reading, writing or math. Contact your local elementary schools and ask about summer volunteer tutoring programs. Search Volunteer Match, for tutoring opportunities!
