In San Diego, we recently had two sad tragedies; Chelsea King, who was 17yrs .old and Amber Dubois,14yrs. old, both found dead. Chelsea went missing a few weeks ago as she went running after school, something that she did on a regular basis, in a neighborhood where most residents felt safe. Chelsea's body was found about 5 days after she went missing but they had already arrested a sex-offender for her rape and murder. Her family, her friends, her high school and her community were devasted as they were able to organize thousands of volunteers to help the authorities search for her as they all had hopes she would be found alive. Amber Dubois, went missing a year ago as she was walking to school and the authorities received a tip just a few days ago where to find her body which they did find her remains which were confirmed by dental records that it was her. Amber's parents held out hope that she would come back someday so they were very heartbroken! This same sex offender is also a suspect in Amber's case as well.
It's just sad as these 2 beautiful girls had their entire life ahead of them just to be snuffed out by someone who has no regard for life at all. There have been these stories all across the U.S., girls and boys, many of them no older than 7yrs old so we definitely have a major problem even after some really good laws have been passed to help protect our kids such as "Amber Alerts," Jessica's Law, just to name a few but it's obviously not enough.
I have taken self-defense classes and several important facts I haved learned is to always be "aware" of your surroundings, don't go anywhere alone and keep your cell phone on. Many of these abductions are happening in afluent neighborhoods and kids taken out of their beds at night like Elizabeth Smart which had a much happier ending, Thank God, so it can happen anywhere, anytime!
To all my fellow members of "Get Ur Good On', please be careful especially when you are out in public and on the internet, too. If you have a situation that something doesn't feel right, then your 'gut' instinct is always right so call 911, call out to any other adults around or run as fast a you can away from that situation. This is obviously a major issue facing all of our communities so please do what you can to help keep your neighborhood safe!!!
