There are many problems in the world, but one of the most important is being ignored by many people. That problem is global warming. What you may not know is, if we don't stop polluting, Antartica and the Artic will melt untill all of the ice is water. If that happens, the ocean will rise 215 feet. That can cause many problems. Islands will be swallowed by water. Beaches will flood and erode, destroying many homes and property. I'm not trying to scare you, I'm just telling the truth. We need to act now. If we don't, many futures could be crushed. Hurricanes will grow stronger. More and more animals polar animals will lose their homes, causing extinction. During one of the U.N. climate talks, studies showed that the Artic ice cap might disappear in 2030,or 2014 even. That would be a disaster. The polar ice cap keeps our planet cool so it can sustain life. Not because it is cold, but because it is white. It acts as a mirror reflecting some of the sun's harmful rays back into space. But we are putting so much carbon dioxide and other heat trapping gases in the atmosphere that the earth is heating up. Normally, that would be okay because plants and trees take lots of it out of the atmosphere to make food; photosynthesis. But this is different. Now we are putting too much in the atmosphere and we are cutting down trees and killing plants. That is global warming. That is making the ice caps warmer. And we all know what happens after that. Not only is that making the ocean rise, it will make the polar animals have trouble getting to the food. Since the ice is melting and/or breaking away, the icebergs start drifting away or they melt or sink. Most animals use icebergs to float on to get to their food. But now even the icebergs are melting. So the only way is to swim or find a place with more icebergs. But for many, the food is to far away so they drown or die of starvation. But lets move a little closer to home. Polar animals aren't the only ones who will suffer. Other animals will have many problems too. Some of their homes will be cut down for industry mills, or something that all of us love. Shopping malls. For us, that's great, but for animals, not so much. Also, the heat is making tropical species struggle. As the Earth heats up, animals move toward cooler regions to get out of the heat. Although it's a cool sight, this leads to problems. The new species begin to wipe out the native species. In the Artic regions, the animals can't go any farther, so they must adjust. Their food sources are dying out due to this as well. The animals end up dying, either from starvation or from new species eating them for food. Find out more at http://noaa.gov/climate
