Que es Teletón?

Teletón es un proyecto de unidad nacional, el cual a través de los valores como amor, generosidad y solidaridad ha logrado convocar a todo México con el firme propósito de fomentar una mejor calidad de vida para los niños y jóvenes con discapacidad.

Teletón representa la oportunidad de renovar la confianza en las personas y en las instituciones, simboliza la unión y el compromiso de diferentes sectores de la sociedad en torno a esta causa social.

Sus objetivos:

Promover la unidad nacional en torno a nuestros valores.
Promover una cultura de integración a favor de las personas con discapacidad.
Construir y operar centros de rehabilitación para menores con discapacidad.
Apoyar a instituciones que trabajan en el sector de la discapacidad en la República Mexicana a través del Fondo de Apoyo a Instituciones (FAI).

Su historia:

En diciembre de 1978 en Chile, el conductor de televisión Mario Kreutzberger, “Don Francisco” hizo público el compromiso de apoyar a las personas con discapacidad; proyecto que hoy en día en muchos países de América Latina se conoce como Teletón.

Los medios de comunicación se unieron para participar en un evento que rebasó las fronteras del mundo durante 27 horas en una emisión continua con un solo fin: brindar ayuda a los niños con discapacidad.

El 12 de diciembre de 1997 México toma la iniciativa de “Don Francisco” y convoca por primera vez a 70 medios de comunicación, personalidades del espectáculo, diversas empresas y a toda la nación. Es así, como gracias al amor de cada mexicano nació Teletón y desde entonces la suma de voluntades hace posible trabajar arduamente por la rehabilitación de los niños y jóvenes con discapacidad.

Como han visto Teleton no es solo en Mexico, sino en otros paises de latinoamerica como Honduras, Guatemala, Uruguay, Chile, etc. En Mexico se llevara a cabo el 2 y 3 de diciembre, pero TU ya puedes ayudar cooperando con el boteo.

For the past couple of years my sister and I have gotten involved in helping others. Throughout the year I have donated to foundations like St. Judes Hospital, Feed The Children, Help The Rescues, and other foundations. Last year my sister and I found a shelter home near us that we thought would be great to go to and help out. So on Thanksgiving last year we went and helped out in the kitchen. I have never pealed SO many potatoes in my LIFE! It was the best though. We got to meet many of the people there. Being there it gave me the best feeling in the world knowing that I was actually helping people. We actually made a couple of friends who we like to visit throughout the year. One special friend really touched my heart. This man has gone through a lot in his life, but he kept his faith and to this day he is trying to make himself a better person. My sister and I went again on Christmas and we helped cook and serve the food. We brought bags of clothing that were new/lightly worn to donate, such as, sweaters, t-shirts, pants, hoodies, and etc. The smiles on their faces made me tear up. So now this year I asked my school principal if we could set up a box in school where people can donate clothing that is new/lightly worn and she fell in love with the idea! It was passed! So now in a couple of weeks I will be at the shelter home on Thanksgiving with bags of clothes (hopefully)!! To tell you the truth, MY DREAM is to hopefully have an organization/foundation where I can help others.

Don't u see that Miley Cyrus is such a good role model. She cares about the enviroment, cares about kids, cares about people who are homeless, and she helps people by thanking them for supporting her, telling them she loves us, giving them food and clothes. So do u want to be JUST like her. She's not just loved by her fans because of her acting and singing. But, she's also love by her golden heart :)

Today i was in housing of poor people.It's really awful! Raising awareness about youth homelessness

We all know that Youth homelessness is an issue and we should do something to make a difference.

In a spirit of National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week I wanna try to do something

and make a difference so I decided to make a facebook page to raise awareness about youth homelessness.

Well this my First blog. Im Pauline Erika from Philippines, a 17 years old girl who loves Miley Cyrus, yeah Thats the first reason why i join here. I really really admire her. I hate the outside, i hate being in a crowd, so how can i make a difference?? That's my problem, you know.. i like to change myself but i dont know how. I'd always want to be a part of some charity events, Youth organization,etc. I always wanted to help other people But i dont have a courage. Maybe not now, but i promise that someday i can change the world for a better future.

Nearly 1.7 million people under the age of 18 will experience homelessness this year. Miley Cyrus, Get Ur Good On, and YSA want to help young people raise awareness and address youth homelessness. Youth homelessness is an issue Miley is very passionate about, she has donated clothing to a family shelter in Los Angeles for several years. Last year, she was deeply moved after viewing the HBO documentary “Homeless: The Motel Kids of Orange County” and encourages people to view the documentary to learn about youth homelessness. Hey guys!

I'm new :) Just wanted to introduce myself xx

Firstly, I'm Phoebe :) 14 and I live with Cystic Fibrosis. A genetic disease and bassically we have thicker then normal mucus and it clogs up our bodies organs esspecially the respiritory and digestive tract. My life includes: daily medications, physio therapy, breathing treatments and hospital appointments, and admissions. It's a hard disease to live with but I know that one day there will be a cure! I am a strong Christian and I know that God gave me my disease for a reason :) I love singing, acting, travelling, reading, writing, beautiful things, life, laughing, smiling, talking, helping people, raising awareness for Cystic Fibrosis, animals! Life is beautiful and I treasure every second :)

Birthing Kits for disadvantaged mothers in Ethiopia

Hello again :D

Today I spent my morning helping prepare sterile birthing kits for mother's in Ethiopia :)

It was organised through my church, all it required was 2 hands and some of your time, without these birthing kits, many of the babies and their mother's could die due to lack of sanitation and without the support.

We packaged 2x rubber gloves, 5x gauze to clean the baby, 1x Scalpel and 3 pieces of string to tie the umbilical cord.

It was actually alot of fun packaging them with everyone else who came to help out :) and it was cool knowing that these simple little packages were going to make a huge difference in the fate of the baby and their mother and their lives.

Everyone should get involved in little projects like this!

Papua New Guinea Trip 2

Well, I guess its time I wrote about my second trip to Papua New Guinea.

My youth group had decided that for this years camp, we would go over to Papua New Guinea to help run a camp for disadvantaged kids. We would go for 10 days and we would also help at the school being teachers and performing little drama's for them. We required over $3000 to get us all over there, for sporting equipment, Christmas presents and other school supplies. This required alot of fundraising.

Over several weeks of fundraising every weekend at our church by making coffee, selling cakes we had made at youth group the night before and the generosity of strangers helped us get closer to our $3000 target. Still, we didn't have enough so we organised with the local McDonald's that on one Monday night, our whole youth team would go over to the McDonald's and serve behind the counters for free, they said that whatever money that came through our registers, our youth group and our mission would get 10%. It was really nice of them to get involved.

We needed only a few hundred dollars, so I started talking with the school to see what they could do for us in the way of funding, they agreed that at the upcoming talent show, they would have a gold coin donation entry and all the money raised from this would come towards our trip. Through this and the kind donations from the people at my school, we reached our goal.

With this money we went to the local sports store - Rebel Sport and they were amazing and gave us heaps of free footballs, caps and other sporting equipment along with massive discounts on the other equipment we bought.

A few weeks later we were on our way, 6 of us youth making a team were in Port Moresby. This was really exciting for me to be able to see everybody again, but it was everyone else's first time. Over the first few day's we were at the camp and we got to hand out with all the kids again, its always amazing hearing their stories and seeing what were doing for them changed their lives.

We got to give them hugs and show them love, some of them don't have families and some live with no roof over their heads. We may not have done alot for them in our eyes, but we made a big difference in their eyes which makes it all worthwhile :)

En 2009 fui al concierto de los Jonas Brothers. Había recibido un correo electrónico desde el team Jonas 3 días antes, diciendo que había ganado entradas para el M&G, nunca había estado tan emocionada en toda mi vida.
Cuando llegué, estaba temblando, la espera había terminado. mi amiga y yo fuimos las siguientes en entrar, y cuando entré en el lugar, las lágrimas comenzaron a caer. Joe se acercó y me dijo ‘no llores’, y luego me abrazó. Yo tenía mucho que decir, pero no encontré las palabras.
Me tomé foto con los tres, y cuando tomé la foto junto a Kevin, vi que él le susurró algo a Joe. Yo estaba confundida al principio, pero luego me puso a su lado, mientras mi amiga hablaba con Nick y Joe. Kevin había encontrado mi secreto más oscuro y secreto. Durante seis meses me estaba cortando, nada demasiado grave en el momento, pero se estaba haciendo grave en el tiempo, y las cosas estaban cada vez más difícil. Kevin había visto mis heridas, entonces él me abrazó y me dijo las palabras que se quedarán conmigo para siempre: “Me di cuenta de una cosa, no voy a decir en voz alta porque estoy seguro de que sabes de lo que estoy hablando, y, obviamente, algo muy personal. Te prometo que todo estará bien, Nick, Joe y yo te amamos, ¿ok? Nunca lo olvides. Todos ustedes son muy especiales, y no dejes que nadie te diga algo diferente.” Lo único que pude decir fue “gracias, Te amo”, mientras lo abrazaba por segunda vez, temblando. Joe y Nick, me guiñaron un ojo y me sonrieron mientras yo estaba entre lágrimas. Cuando estaba fuera, Kevin gritó “Ten cuidado, y recuerda lo que te dije!”

Desde ese día nunca me volví a cortar. Kevin me ha salvado de algo que podría haber causado mi caída.
Los Jonas Brothers son gente asombrosa. Sólo quería a todos a leer esta historia, y entonces todo el mundo puede saber lo maravilloso que son. Esa noche cambió mi vida.

True Sportsmanship

It is been a while since I've posted a blog here so I hope everyone at Get Ur Good On is having an awesome year! Mine started out with me getting sick at the beginning of the year with some strange illness that stumped all my doctors and just started feeling better a few months ago. I missed a lot of school which was very hard because I love school and missed all my friends! I never really had a diagnosis and the doctors concluded that it was a bizarre viral infection because they only know about 20% of all viruses that attack the human body. I am a freshman now in high school and LOVE IT!

So, back in July, I broke my arm in a soccer tournament. The injury happened right in front of the coach/parents of the other team who heard the break. One of the moms was a nurse and immediately took action by getting ice and trying to calm me down. It looked really bad, deformed and was so painful. The ref called my coach over who then in turn got my mom and since I was going into shock, she decided to call an ambulance. I made it to the ER so the care of the EMT's, doctors and nurses was great, no surgery and I got my purple cast. My team played in the semi finals the following morning so I had to watch my team play so they were very happy to see me and I to see them!!!

Well, a few days after the tournament, the coach of the team we were playing when I broke my arm called my coach to get our address and they sent me a card signed by all their players, coach and parents! I was so touched by this gesture because you just don't hear of that very often in sports as players get hurt all the time. So, the story doesn't end there. We played this team last weekend for our league play and their coach came over before the game to see how I was doing and dropped off some brownies from their team to ours!!!

A BIG THANKS to the EL CAJON MATRIX GIRLS U16AA-A TEAM for showing the 'true' meaning of sportsmanship!!! I don't think I even realized just how important sportsmanship is in sports until this experience! Portraying good sportsmanship is showing respect for yourself, your teammates, your opponents, the coaches and referees and will provide a positive experience for the spectators as well.

My mom and I actually witnessed a fight at one of our soccer tournaments between adults and couldn't help but worry about the example they were setting for all the kids who were watching the violence unfold before their eyes!

Sportsmanship is an attitude that will have a positive impact on everyone around you! I do remember the excruciating pain when I broke my arm, yet, I am thankful to have personally experienced the caring hearts from an opposing team and their actions towards me, when they could've just walked off the field that day, yet, they set an example by doing something very special and uplifting. I think the most incredible part of this story is that they also lost that game and still found it within themselves to show the grace of what sportsmanship is really all about!

In December, I will be heading to Mexico to volunteer in an orphanage!!. I am really looking forward to this as i will get to help contribute to the orphanage, spend time with the kids and help educate and encourage good nutrition and physical activity. I am looking forward to this opportunity and I am hoping to encourage others to get involved in international volunteer work.
