The UnitedHealth HEROES Service-Learning Grant

Did you know that obesity is one of the leading health threats for children and youth? And that since the late 1970’s the prevalence of obesity has more than doubled for youth ages 6-19? You have the opportunity to reverse that trend by educating yourself and your community! The UnitedHealth HEROES Service-Learning Grant, offered by Youth Service America and UnitedHealth Group, provides up to $1,000 for service-learning projects that take place during the 2010 spring semester and focus on childhood. (Service-learning is a teaching method that connects community service or volunteerism with educational opportunities.)

By partnering with a teacher, a community educator, a service-learning coordinator, or others in the health professions, you can create an initiative that addresses any of the factors that contribute to childhood obesity such as poor dietary habits of lack of physical activity. For example, a science lesson about how calories become energy can turn into a service project teaching your peers about the best foods to pack for lunch. Or you can study aerobic exercise in Phys. Ed. and then lead your classmates in morning exercises.

States eligible for this year's UnitedHealth HEROES program include:

Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin.
