Get Ur Good On for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

When I was 10 years old, my mother was diagnosed with Breast Cancer, for the second time in her life. This time it came back as Stage 4 and had spread to her liver, lung and bone. Since then, she has endured many different types of chemotherapy, and even a surgery a little more than a year ago to place a hepatic pump in her abdomen to pump the chemo directly to her liver. My mother is truly one of the strongest women I know. I was forced to mature very quickly at a very young age because of my mother's fight with cancer. From that day on, I made it my mission in life to aid in finding a cure for this horrible disease.

I have been a member of the Breast Cancer Awareness Club at my high school since my freshman year and this year I am the President of the club. In previous years, we've held bake sales and sold t-shirts to raise funds and awareness around the community. This year, I wanted to go all out and really get more people involved! I, along with my committee, have organized Breast Cancer Awareness sporting events, such as soccer games, field hockey games and even a football game. The Boys Soccer, Girls Soccer and Field Hockey teams all wore pink jerseys during the games, which were donated by a few wonderful supporters. The Football team wore pink arm bands and Breast Cancer Awareness ribbons on their helmets. We sold t-shirts, bracelets, concessions and handed out information about our club and the foundations we are considering donating to at the end of the year. Not only have we raised more money in 2 months than in the 3 previous years combined, we have been able to spread awareness around our school, which means more than anything to me and my family personally.

Each year in October, our club participates in the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. This year we had 10 girls from our high school walk together. The Making Strides Walk is such an eye opening experience for me because it shows us all that regardless of what ethnicity, gender or background each individual comes from, we are able to forget about all of that and come together for an amazing cause. We all live such different lives and it's so nice to see that it is possible for everyone to unite under a common cause. The Making Strides Walk may only be 5 miles, but it's 5 miles of bonding with each other, forming new friendships, understanding and compassion.

Recently, I attended a Women's Day luncheon at a friend's church, where they focused on Breast Cancer Awareness. Little did I know that most of the luncheon would involve me sobbing as two women who are very dear to me and my mom, tell her that she is their hero and spoke of how wonderful a woman she is. There, I set up a table with information and ribbons for people to take. My mother has had such an incredible impact on so many people's lives, including mine, and it was so phenomenal to see her be honored in such an incredible light. Without my mother's incredible strength and support, I would not be the woman I am today. I am sincerely grateful for all of the powerful women in my life, including my mother, and my promise to put an end to Breast Cancer is my simple way of saying thank you. Thank you to all the mothers, daughters, aunts, grandmothers and all of the women in our lives for showing us how to be strong and how to love.

Support. Fight. Cure.
